Farewell to Nova Scotia (Art Print)
Farewell to Nova Scotia (Art Print)
For previous generations of Nova Scotians, history was kept and shared through song and folklore. Families gathered in the kitchen to sing together or around a fire to hear tales that had been passed down, so old their origin was lost.
This artwork is a tribute to my great, great aunt, Helen Creighton, who made it her life’s work to record these folksongs and stories. She traveled around the province to meet with families and collect their stories. Sitting with them in their kitchens, singing around a piano, and preserving this piece of our culture.
I took inspiration for this artwork from the piano keys themselves, lovingly played for centuries to share stories through song. The poplar slats carry the shape of the keys, and the chosen colours represent the notes of the iconic “Farewell to Nova Scotia” song, in my version of a Red Sky at Night, Sailor’s Delight palette.
